"Sourcing decisions made today have a direct impact on you, your organisation, local industries and the future of the African child." This was Prof Douglas Boateng's key message at the Smart Procurement World Regional Western Cape Event held last week at Grand West in Cape Town.

"Whilst the rest of the world is strategically sourcing from Africa for long-term economic development, Africans are generally buying from the rest of the world for short-term gain," Prof Boateng said, adding that "With collective industrialisation effort, region-wide medium- to long-term growth prospects are strong." Prof Boateng is Africa's first ever Professor Extraordinaire for supply and value chain management, and chairman of Ghana Procurement Authority.

Africa in general continues to import goods and materials despite the fact that it has substantial amounts of raw materials and enough qualified labour force to drive innovation and trade. Non commodity based trade between African countries is growing but at a relatively slower pace. "This needs to stop!" said Prof Boateng. His keynote address came at a time that South Africa is embarking on various initiatives to drive growth, investor confidence and to build on stronger currency.

Provincial Treasury outlined the Provincial/Municipal Economic Review and Outlook based on economic intelligence research outcomes. These feature sectors of economic focus for the province specifically by analysing factors that are driving broad sector developments. Marcia Kornsten, Chief Director for Public Policy Services, Western Cape Provincial Treasury, added that the province is embarking on efforts to mainstream the provincial economic policies.

"The department has an important role to play in ensuring that public confidence is inspired through prudent financial governance and the professional monitoring of the budget allocated to service delivery," said Zakariya Hoosain, Head Official, Western Cape Provincial Government, Treasury.

Smart Procurement World, co-located with the Enterprise and Supplier Development Expo, is South Africa's biggest sourcing expo and is designed to create links between buyer and seller. The Expo hosts over 200 black-owned businesses in the region.
